This year, Apple will release its mixed-reality headset, but getting there wasn't easy, and it cost the company some new features in the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating systems.


This is what Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says. In the latest issue of his "Power On" newsletter, he gives a detailed report on what Apple has planned for 2023.

Gurman says that Apple is finally getting ready to release its mixed reality headset before the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. This is after a number of delays. Reality Pro is a likely name for the device, and xrOS is likely to be the name of the operating system that runs on it, which is called Borealis. The product could hit stores in the fall of 2023. It is already being tested by a "small number of high-profile software developers."

This fits with the latest report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that "software-related issues" would likely delay the mixed reality headset until the second half of 2023.

The headset is likely to be a high-end, expensive device with an Apple M2 chip, more than 10 cameras on the inside and outside, and displays with a very high resolution.

Apple is said to have used some resources from other departments to get there. This could mean that the company will have less to show for its other products. Gurman says that the upcoming versions of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14 will have fewer big changes than was first planned.

Gurman says that new MacBook Pros will come out in the first half of 2023, but the 12-inch MacBook that has been talked about won't happen. Gurman says that Apple's iPads, Apple Watch, and AirPods won't get any major updates this year, but they might get small performance boosts. The Apple TV and AirPods, on the other hand, might not get any updates at all. The original HomePod was discontinued in March 2021, but a bigger one could come back with a lower price, a new touch control panel on top, and the same S8 chip that is in the newest Apple Watch models.

The iPhone is the main product that Apple is known for. Gurman says that the new iPhone hardware could be impressive, even though the changes to the software will be smaller than expected. All four of the new models should have the Dynamic Island, but only the Pro models will have a new titanium frame and haptic volume buttons. The new iPhones will finally have a USB-C charging port instead of a Lightning port. This is likely because Apple doesn't have much choice in Europe but to make the switch.
